Top 5 Tech Gifts Under ₹5,000 (2014)

‘Tis the season as Google tells us through its doodles and I would like to help you guys make last-minute gift purchases for that geeky friend/ relative, this festive season.

This is a list of tech gifts that I’m sure that geeky friend of yours would like while you are on a budget of ₹5,000 only.

5. A 1TB External Hard Disk

Anyone who owns a computer with an SSD will have at most a 256GB internal storage. These people will appreciate an external storage solution. These days you can pick up a 1 TB external hard disk from any online portal for under ₹5000. Two of the top contenders are Seagate’s Backup Plus Slim 1 TB hard disk and competitor Western Digital’s My Passport Ultra 1TB hard disk. I have seen and used products by both of these firms and can say that their products are worth the money. You can grab both of these products from Amazon at a great discounted prices — the Backup Plus can be had for ₹4247 while the My Passport  Ultra is available for ₹4271. Since, the price difference is barely a hundred bucks I say go for the thinner and more portable Seagate Backup Plus Slim.

3. Over-the-head Audio Technica Headphones

For just under ₹5000 you can get a nice set of headphones from Audio Technica, JBL and a host of other audio giants, this festive season. Among these all of these brands, I’d recommend getting the Audio Technica  ATH PRO5MK2CM and the ATH-AD500X. While both of these headphones cost above ₹5000, you can grab both of them for just aback under at They are both very comfortable and provide a little bit of too much bass but that can be forgotten given the price at which you are getting these awesome pair of headphones. All-in-all your music-loving friends/relatives won’t hate you for getting them anyone of these sets.

Asus Zenfone 4,5 & 6 launching at midnight at amazing prices!

Seems like launching phones exclusively with e-retail giants is the new fad amongst smartphone manufacturers.Following in the footsteps of trend maker Motorola, Asus is now entering the Indian smartphone market with the latest Zenfones 4, 5 and 6, available exclusively at Flipkart.

The Zenfone 4 comes in 2 versions the A400CG and A450CG. Both models differ in screen size as well as resolution. While the A400CG sports 4 inch screen with a WVGA resolution clocking a pixel density of 233 ppi, the A450CG sports a 4.5 inch display with FWVGA resolution totalling a pixel density of 217 ppi. Another point of difference is the out-of-the-box Android version — while A400Cg comes with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean  and is upgradeable to 4.4 KitKat, the A450CG comes with Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box. The A450Cg also ups the A400Cg by having a better rear camera of 8MP compared to the 5MP camera of the A400CG. The A400CG has a 1600mAh battery, which is slightly smaller than the A450CG’s 1750mAh battery.

Other than the above points, both the Zenfone 4 models are quite the same. Both feature a 1.2 GHz Intel Atom Z2520 dual-core processor which has Intel Hyper Threading making a total of 4 cores! Both feature a TFT display protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3, 0.3 MP front camera and 1 GB of RAM.

Both these phones also lack a rear camera flash.

While the A400CG is priced at ₹5,999, the A450CG offers a larger screen and better camera at just ₹1,000 more.

Onto the sub-₹10k phone, the Zenfone 5.

The Zenfone 5 sports a 5-inch HD IPS display which is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and clocks a pixel density of 293 ppi. The display supports Glove Touch Input as well. It features a better 8MP camera than in the Zenfone 4 (4.5-in) with autofocus but a better 2MP front camera as well. The smartphone also features a LED flash. It sports the same Intel Z2520 dual-core processor as in the Zenfone 4 models but clocked in at 1.6 GHz. It also has double the RAM of the Zenfone 4 i.e. 2GB of RAM.

The Zenfone 5 also runs on Android v4.3 (Jelly Bean), and is upgradable to v4.4 (KitKat). It has a bigger 2110 mAh battery as well.

The prices of the bunch, the Zenfone 6, is reasonably priced at ₹16,999. The phone is pretty much the same as the Zenfone 5 except in 3 areas.

Screen Shot 2014-07-09 at 11.20.01 PM

First off, it s screen size is (yes, you guessed right) a whopping 6 inches. The resolution on the other hand is same as the Zenfone 5 reducing the pixel density to 244 ppi. Next up, the phone features a better, 13MP primary camera. And lastly, it has a much bigger 3300mAh battery which results in an overall 50 g increase in weight.

All of the above phones feature 8GB of internal memory other than the Zenfone 6 which has 16 gigs of storage. On the connectivity front, all of these devices feature EDGE, 3g and WiFi connectivity along with Bluetooth 4.o, A-GPS and GLONASS. Though, the company has omitted the FM antenna from the phone which certainly isn’t a deal breaker but is definitely considered a con in India, where people who are not connected to Internet turn to FM for entertainment and news.

The phones also come with 5 GB Free Lifetime ASUS Web Storage as well as 1 year manufacturer warranty for Phone and 6 months warranty for in the box accessories.

The phones are available in multiple colours, while Zenfones 4 and 5 are available in Charcoal Black, Cherry Red, Pearl White, Solar yellow and Sky Blue, the Zenfones 5 and 6 replace the Solar Yellow and Sky Blue with a Chapagne Gold colour option.

Taking an overall look, we would recommend you buy the Zenfone 5 which offers a somewhat comfortable and crisp display with a decent battery and cameras (both, front and rear) at a decent budget price. The final choice though, is yours!
