Motorola expects global profits with its 4G smartphone plans for demand-driven India: Rick Osterloh

Motorola Mobility is planning to bring affordable  4G smartphones to India in 2015, one of its priority markets along with Brazil, which according to the world’s third-largest smartphone maker will be critical for its global charge to become market leader.

After being acquired by China’s Lenovo Group Ltd., the US-based smartphone maker aims to lead their global smartphone business while trying to rise to position 3 from position 4 in India due to the strong demand, said Rick Osterloh, president and COO at Motorola Mobility, to the Economic Times in an interview.

“The transition to 4G (in India) will come quickly,” Osterloh said. “Next year, we are going to be very aggressive in the 4G value proposition for end user.”

Pebble smartwatch gets price cut and new fitness features!

Pebble, the smartwatch startup which started the wearable wrist revolution a couple of years back with its KickStarter campaign, has recently revised the prices of all of its models, bringing the price of the entry-level Pebble down to $99 and the premium Pebble Steel to $199. Along with the decrease in price, the startup has also improved upon the fleet of fitness-related features introduced to the watches in an update earlier this year.

The Pebble smartwatch and Pebble Steel had aspirations to track fitness, but were never able to do background tracking — an essential feature for counting steps. That’s changed now: Pebble’s latest software release adds true background fitness tracking capabilities, while partnerships with Jawbone and Misfit have resulted in new apps that work on the Pebble to run continuously and track steps and sleep, just like an everyday fitness tracker.

Fitness bands have been selling alongside the likes of the Pebble for a while now, but as Apple and Google have demonstrated, smartwatches can comfortably include most of the exercise-related features as standard. The new Pebble update sees both regular and Steel versions of the Pebble track steps and sleep-related data in the background, eliminating that tedious rigmarole of having to leave the Misfit app open for step-counting.

Different fitness apps are free to use their own algorithms to interpret the data: or, as Eric Migicovsky, CEO of Pebble, explained during a phone call to CNET, some are even working to develop non-fitness apps, like one to track epileptic seizures while sleeping. The Pebble will be able to track fitness (or use its compass) while offline and unpaired with a phone, holding up to 140 days of data without syncing. But the initial apps won’t sync with phone apps yet: that feature will be coming soon.

Along with the new features and price drop, Pebble is also expanding the reach of its smartwatch, with Fry’s, Sam’s Club, and Sprint in the U.S. joining Dixons, O2, and Amazon in the UK to begin retailing the device today onwards.

All these moves by the startup seem to point to the fact that they feel threatened by the entry of the big names like Apple, Motorola and LG with their state of the art looking smartwatches like the round Moto 360 or the svelte Apple Watch…

What do you think of these changes made by Pebble? Let us know by sounding off in the comments!

Flipkart taunting Amazon chief on India visit with “Welcome” ads today

The e-commerce war is playing out hot and heavy between Amazon and Flipkart ahead of the famed US e-tailer’s founder Jeff Bezos’ visit to Bangalore today.

Times of India reports that Flipkart is executing what it has termed as the ‘Welcome Mr. Bezos‘ campaign. The company has put up huge billboards at the airport, highways and close to Amazon’s headquarters – places where these posters are sure to hit Bezos’ eyes – for its festive season sale campaign called ‘Big Billion Day.’ The same will also follow Bezos to Delhi where he is scheduled to go next, according to sources.

It seems like Flipkart wants to send message to it arch-rival telling them who’s at the top. TOI has also reported that Flipkart is running a ‘Project Victory’ campaign within the organization, a celebration of what it calls a win in the first round of war with Amazon.

Motorola launches the next-gen Moto G and Moto X along with the Moto 360 and Hint

Earlier today, Motorola has revealed the much rumoured 2nd Generations of its budget Moto G as well as flagship Moto X smartphones.

Much to the surprise of fans across the globe, the company has launched the smartphones first at its event in India, despite confusing reports of a launch event on Thursday in Chicago.

Along with the smartphones Motorola has also announced that it will be retailing its Android Wear-running smartwatch, the Moto 360 in India as well.

As was expected, the phones will be launched exclusively on Flipkart only.

Another exciting product revealed is the Motorola Hint, which seems to be a really attractive take on the bluetooth headset but more on that later.

Let’s begin with Motorola’s budget offering, the rejigged version of the Moto G…

Motorola sending invites to September 4th Launch event for the Moto 360, smartphones and accessories

Since yesterday, Motorola has been sending out invitations to a media event in Chicago which will be held on the 4th of September. The not so subtle invite displays a picture of a watch (Moto 360), a smartphone with an X (maybe the Moto X+1?), a smartphone with a G ( probably the Moto G2) and a headset that’s likely some type of new wireless accessory(maybe  Whisper Successor).

We’ve also heard about new devices rumoured to be coming out of Motorola for several months now and the latest claim has been that the company is working on a new Nexus device for Google. While we do have a good idea what we might see in a few short weeks in Chi-Town, we’ll try our best to keep an open mind.

Motorola rolling out Android KitKat 4.4.4 for Moto E, G and X in India

Motorola India has announced on Twitter (below) that it is rolling out the latest Android update 4.4.4 for its most recent Moto lines including the flagship X, the budget G and the ultra-low budget E. The update will be available OTA soon.

The Android 4.4.4 KitKat update for the Moto E, Moto G and Moto X will include several stability, framework and security fixes as well as a new phone dialer and OpenSSL-related fixes, according to Motorola.

Just last month, Motorola had rolled out the Android 4.4.3 KitKat update for its Moto E, Moto G and Moto X handsets globally.

Steve Horowitz, SVP, Software Engineering, Motorola had said, “We are excited to announce some icing on top of the, well, KitKat. Starting today [June 3], we are rolling out Android 4.4.3, KitKat, which was just released by Google.”

The 5 Best Ultra-Budget Smartphones for Under ₹ 10,000

On the basis of Operating System (OS), smartphones these days are divided into three types.

iOS is developed by Apple Inc. only for Apple’s devices like the iPhone and the iPad.The iPhone typically starts at ₹37,500 for an 8GB iPhone 5c which does not fit into this budget of ours so don’t expect to see an iPhone in the list below.

Next is the ubiquitous Android which can be seen in pretty much every smartphone in the world. It’s latest version 4.4 is made to run on low-specced phones with just 512MB RAM and a 1 GHz Processor. And since Android is free, there are many budget phones which can be seen running on the Android OS. Android as you may know is developed by Google Inc..

Third, is Windows Phone which is , of course, developed by Microsoft. The latest version in the market is Windows Phone 8.1. Nokia is the only smartphone company in the world who is currently primarily focussed on the WP platform and expect more to come from their stable as Microsoft just bought it out. Currently, there aren’t a lot of Windows Phones out there due to Microsoft’s high OEM charge, as a result of which most of the smartphone companies have shifted base to Google’s free Android. Now, all of this might change in a few months as Microsoft just bought Nokia’s Devices Division but that’s in the future and you need a good smartphone like, NOW!

Motorola Moto E sales to be resumed by Flipkart as it adds 20,000 phones to stock

Flipkart, the exclusive retailer of Motorola’s  ultra-budget smartphone in India has added 20,000 units to its stock and will resume sale on 23rd May i.e today at 11 AM.

“Motorola’s Moto E smartphone will be back in stock on from 11.00 A.M onwards 23 May 2014,” the e-commerce company said in an emailed statement.

Moto E, which is exclusively available at Flipkart, sold out on the very first day (within 16 hours) of the release. The phone was made available for purchase at 12:00 AM on 14 May, but within minutes, the site crashed due to overwhelming user traffic. Even though, it recovered after a few hours, Flipkart had to replenish inventory twice on the same day and finally went out-of-stock by late evening the same day.

Senior executives at Motorola Mobility told TOI that the e-retailer had stocked between 80,000 and 1 lakh units. The orders had surpassed their highest expectations and the US-based company was arranging for a “significant” number of devices to be arranged from China soon.

Motorola’s corporate vice president Magnus Ahlqvist during the launch event said that the company was better prepared for Moto E, following stock outage within hours of the launch of its first device, Moto G, in late 2013, but this evidently didn’t prove enough.

Since stock is limited to just 20,000 units we prompt all our interested viewers to buy it at the earliest at 11Am today! The links can be found below:
